Setting: Milliways Lake

*~*~*

Demyx had been curiously watching the red-haired young woman by her campfire for a while now, while he drifted comfortably at the lake's surface. To be honest, though, all the hard-at-work red-head served to do was make it easier for his mind to drift onto the subject of a different red-head. Her surprised shout, though, brought him back to earth both figuratively and literally.

"Something wrong?" he said with friendly curiosity as he stepped out of the water, approaching the campfire where she sat. She, in turn, was jolted from her thoughts as she moved some kind of oily, herb-smelling ointment from a large metal pan and into a clay jar for storage.

"What? Oh. No, it's just I've finally found the right mixture of ingredients for kenet," she said with a slightly shy, if very pleased, smile. "The recipe I found was close, of course, but this one actually works."

Demyx beamed at her. "Go you! That rocks!" Then it faded into cheerful bemusement again. "What's kenet?"

She grinned. "It's an ointment that'll allow me to fight dragons and finally be of some use to my country," the red-head replied. "I've been trying different ratios of ingredients for months now. But look!" She smeared some of the ointment on her hand and promptly stuck it directly into the flames of her campfire.

"Oh, hey! Careful!" Demyx said, startled. "Those things burn!" He tugged her hand back out of the fire by the sleeve, preparing a small healing spell...

... only to find her hand completely unharmed.

"Huh?" he said, actually grabbing her hand and turning it this way and that to look for the burns that should be there.

"It doesn't even hurt," the girl beamed, proud of herself. "It actually kind of tickles."

Demyx blinked at her, then looked down at the oily substance that had gotten on the fingers of his glove. The smell of strange herbs found its way to his nose as he rubbed the fingers together, spreading the strange ointment across the leather. After a long moment, Demyx carefully reached out and stuck his fingers into the topmost flames of the fire.

It felt practically cool, the fire brushing by the Moogle-made leather as gently as feathers, as intangible as smoke.

Demyx... stared. Pulling his hand back from the fire, he eyed his fingers like they didn't belong to him any more, his thoughts somewhere else completely.

"This is really promising," the girl went on, digging in her bag for paper and pen. "The recipe's been lost for hundreds of years. All our dragon-hunters have had to do without real protection from the dragonfire, and they're known for their scars and missing limbs. This might help change all that, so I need to write down the recipe that works before I forget the specifics. Hey, do you have a pen I could borrow?" she asked as she looked up.

But the person was gone.

As was the jar of kenet.
