Hello, and welcome to October.
It's October.
HEY OCTOBER! YOUR TURN! Please remember to turn down the therostat. Just because you slept in is no reason for it to be nearly 90 degrees outside, got it?
Anyway.
My birthday went splendidly. Slept in until 9:30, went to my only class, got cake with lunch, gave cake away to friends and a professor or two. Went over to Aura's and had lots of tea, some delicious pizza, calzone and cake, and watched anime until 1:30am. Of course, the whole time I was comparing the Sohma family's position with the Bright Shiners, and comparing Kyo (the Cat and his problems with Yrael's problems when he was still Mogget.
Great times. I didn't knit a stitch.
Then I went home and slept from 3am until 7:30, when I got up and got ready for my concert. Ah, the concert. It needs a post all to itself, but I am not giving it one. Just an lj cut.
*exhales*
Everyone was there on time except one of our freshman saxophone players. He's been skipping class a lot lately, everyone's noticed, and is a real smartass about it. He's also always out of tune. Terribly flat, and tries to play loudly to make up for it.
Anyway. We were there at 9am, did the sound check and warm up and everything, to get things ready for the concert at ten. We were the last to play, afte the orchestra and choir, so we had a lot of time to sit. Most of us brought books. Well, who should mosey in three minutes until the concert but our wayward sax. People muttered about him as he came in. He sat down just as the guy doing the introductions for all the speakers got to the microphone.
We all asked him why he was late, and he said he had woken up at eight, and had thought that he couldn't have a concert in the morning. He's "never had a concert in the morning before, so the time for the concert couldn't be 10am." He just went back to sleep. I asked if he had not seen all the emails sent out about when to be on stage and ready, or had not heard the director mention it every single day in class, and he said "Oh, it may come as a surprise to you, but I don't check my email every day." I told him that he's a freshman in college, and will need to quickly learn to pay attention, either the hard way or the easy way. Idiot. I mentioned that he could be docked a letter grade for missing the soundcheck and dress rehearsal, and if he had missed the concert, he would have automatically failed the class. He shot back that it wasn't at all a big deal and that I needed to lighten up.
Many of you will know what I wanted to do to him at that moment.
Well.
The concert started and we got to sit behind the curtains, in our rows with our instruments, listening to the orchestra and choir perform. We were exhanging looks about the off tuning of one of the violins when we heard someone talking.
It seems our littlest saxophone had just received a call on his cellphone and was talking to his girlfriend during the concert. The other freshman saxophone, who sits next to me and is very levelheaded and practical, just blinked at the other guy and wrote a quiet "WTF?" on his music.
The guy talked all through the orchestra part and the choir part.
I was livid. There is no other word for it.
To show such blatant disrespect towards others' hard work and commitment. To show up an hour late for what we've all been working towards. To shrug it off like it doesn't really matter. To be so rude and inconsiderate to those around him.
I have no idea what made him think these things were appropriate actions. What the hell is this guy even doing in wind ensemble? How was he able to get into college band without learning that you Do Not show up late for a concert? That you DO NOT bring a cell phone to a performance, much less use it during the concert. You do NOT wear a novelty tie or jeans (even black jeans) to a concert.
My lord, I wanted to hurt him. Take off the neck and mouthpiece of his saxophone and stab him with it. Augh. And I wasn't even the only one. A number of us were talking after the concert, and we were just appalled at his behavior. At least five of us wanted to go talk to the director about him.
I hate insufferably rude people.
I need to go knit and watch a movie to calm down now.

Showing up for thirty minutes of play rehearsal the week before opening night, using cell phones to order pizza during said rehearsals and eating it backstage while they're supposed to be onstage, talking, laughing, screaming, etc. I plan to eradicate these practices by hand so no one else has to deal with them in college.
